In 20 years, Günther Förg’s price index soared by 617%, Sigmar Polke’s 379% and Emil Nolde’s 37%. Several factors may explain this. Germany is one of the few countries whose market has been almost unaffected by Covid. Unlike other Western countries, overall auction revenues grew in 2020 and the country posted an all-time high in 2021 with total revenues of $357M. The Hauser & Wirth magic works for Förg. The gallery is working on a catalogue raisonné of his work while strengthening his reputation in Asia and the United States with exhibitions, notably at Tarmak22 in Gstaad and Los Angeles in 2022. Förg is in pole position for the June 1 and 2 Lempertz sales in Cologne.
