Fifty percent of worldwide CO2 emissions originate from oil, gas, and coal generated by only 36 leading energy firms. This information is included in the report Carbon Majors, developed by the American research organization InfluenceMap.

The authors estimated the overall emissions from the combustion of oil, gas, and coal generated by 169 large energy corporations: 33.9 billion tons of CO2 in 2023.

Saudi Aramco ranks first for harmful emissions, with its fuel contributing to 4.4% of total global CO2 emissions (1.66 billion tons). The leading five emitters include Coal India (3.7% of CO2 emissions), China's CHN Energy (3.6%), Iran's National Iranian Oil Company (2.8%), and another Chinese firm, Jinneng Group (2.9%). The list of the top ten features two Russian firms, Gazprom (sixth place with 2.3% of global CO2 emissions) and Rosneft (eighth with 1.9%).

"Even with international climate pledges, a limited number of the biggest fossil fuel producers are substantially ramping up production and emissions."

"The research emphasizes the unequal effect of these firms on the climate emergency and advocates for the establishment of corporate accountability measures," stated InfluenceMap analyst Emmett Conner.
