For over ten years, Germany has steadily held the top position among EU nations regarding asylum requests. The highest numbers were in 2016 and 2023, as the nation took in over one million refugees, initially from Syria and subsequently the same amount from Ukraine.

In the initial quarter of 2025, Germany ultimately relinquished its leading position. An unpublished report by the European Commission from April 2, which was obtained by the newspaper Welt am Sonntag this week, reveals that Germany saw a 41% decrease in asylum applications from January 1 to March 31 compared to the same timeframe last year.

The report relies on calculations from the European Asylum Agency and includes all EU member states. Consequently, the report indicates that France led with the highest number of applications (over 40.8 thousand asylum requests), trailed by Spain (exceeding 39.3 thousand applications). Germany rounded out the top three with slightly more than 37.3 thousand applications. At the bottom of the list are Slovakia (37 applications) and Hungary (22 applications).

If Germany succeeds in sustaining the decline in asylum application numbers, it will ultimately relinquish its top position in this metric in the EU by the end of 2025, a rank it has held solely since 2011.
