Flights of the new airliner may begin as early as 2035, the company said.
The aircraft is based on the use of hydrogen as the main source of energy. Airbus believes that hydrogen has great potential for use not only in aerospace but also in other industries due to its exceptional characteristics.
“This is a historic moment for all commercial aviation, and we intend to lead one of the most global transformations in the aviation industry. The concepts we present today demonstrate our bold vision for a zero-emission aviation future. I believe that using hydrogen is like synthetic fuels and as a primary source of energy - commercial aviation has great potential to further improve the environmental performance of aircraft,” said Airbus President Guillaume Faury.
Three concepts were named ZEROe ("zero level of harmful emissions"). The aircraft are powered by a modified gas turbine engine that burns hydrogen instead of kerosene. Liquid hydrogen will be stored in special tanks.
The aircraft with a turbofan engine will have a capacity of 120-200 passengers and a flight range of over 3.7 thousand kilometers, that is, it will be able to perform transcontinental flights. The version with a turboprop engine for 100 passengers will be able to fly 1.85 thousand km and is suitable for short-haul flights.
In addition, Airbus presented an aircraft with an integrated fuselage for up to 200 passengers and a flight range of more than 3.7 thousand km. The aircraft's spacious fuselage provides many options for storing and supplying hydrogen, as well as a variety of passenger layouts.
