Two million protective masks from the coronavirus for distribution across Europe will be donated by the Chinese billionaire and Alibaba co-founder Jack Ma. The first lot of the masks was scheduled to reach Belgium late on Friday.
500,000 coronavirus test kits and a million masks will also be given by Ma to the United States as there is an apparent shortage of testing kits to diagnose the deadly coronavirus which causes the disease called Covid-19.
According to a joint statement by the Alibaba and Jack Ma foundations and the Belgian region of Wallonia and Liege Airport, a cargo plane loaded with 500,000 masks and other medical supplies such as test kits has landed at Liege Airport and is being sent top be distributed in Italy.
The airport, that has also been chosen to become the main European hub for e-commerce shipments of Alibaba, will also see more flight landing there with coronavirus kit, masks and other medical materials in the near future.
“Through a donation of 500,000 testing kits and 1 million masks, we join hands with Americans in these difficult times,” said a tweet from the Jack Ma Foundation. It also urged greater international cooperation for fighting the coronavirus pandemic.
"Drawing from my own country's experience, speedy and accurate testing and adequate protective equipment for medical professionals are most effective in preventing the spread of the virus," said the founder of e-commerce giant Alibaba in a statement on Twitter
"We hope that our donation can help Americans fight against the pandemic!" he said in the statement, which was posted by the Jack Ma Foundation. Ma, who is China's richest man, said that over the past weeks, his organizations had helped provide similar supplies to virus-hit countries such as Japan, South Korea, Italy, Iran and Spain,” he added.
Ma further said that any individual country would not be able to resolve to eliminate the coronavirus pandemic that is being faced by the world today. He added that the only way to beat this pandemic was to eliminate physical borders and share the know-how, knowledge expertise and the hard-earned lessons about tackling the spread of the virus.
